Seeking advice for redundant systems

Good $GREETINGTIME
Last year we built an Asterisk 1.2/FreePBX 2.3 server which has proven to be as reliable as (and much cheaper to run than) our former Cisco Call Manager gear. (...and a parenthetical thanks to those here who helped make it work so well.)
Now we'd like to build a second redundant server. Is it necessary to stay with Asterisk 1.2 if we want to be able to copy data files between the two servers, or may we move to 1.4 on the new server?

From a practical standpoint,
From a practical standpoint, you'd want the servers to be as identical as possible, especially software-wise.
