FreePBX Release Candidate & Easy Upgrade Options!

p_lindheimer's picture

It’s no secret to many of you that we have added an easy upgrade option for you to opt into the current beta program that has just gone to release candidate stage. If you have not seen it, Module Admin now has a 2.4 to 2.5 Upgrade Tool that works just like the one we provide on 2.3 and has been tested thousands of times with no incident!

We have already seen hundreds of users upgrade to the beta with this module and no issues have been reported so you should feel comfortable using it. With the bug count hovering near 0 and holding, we are excited to move the program to a release candidate for FreePBX 2.5.0!

When we released version 2.4 in December/January we were very excited about the new features and integrity checking ability that it provided. We did not think we could out-do ourselves this time around. BOY WERE WE WRONG! So, if you have been reluctant to try out version 2.5 because it has been labeled “beta” or because there was no GUI enabled upgrade path, take another look!

MIA (Missing in Action) - no more!

There has been a group of disappointed users who have asked for a way to participate in the beta program and whose wishes have fallen on deaf ears. When Fonality announced the fork of FreePBX in trixbox CE on May 31st, two of their three primary reasons stated were: “Faster Bug Fixing … New Features.” Based on their online module repository, they have provided no updates since their announcement despite the 3 security updates that FreePBX published back to version 2.2 and the many bug fixes that have been released. With 397 closed features and bug fixes on 2.5, many of those bugs present on 2.4 and none made available to our trixbox friends, it’s no surprise they’ve been asking for our help!

Wait no longer, we are responding to those requests by providing a trixbox version of the upgrade module for those of you who have been deprived of the ability to participate in this great release! The upgrade has been documented on our upgrade page and can all be done from the GUI with a few simple steps, repeated here for simplicity:

  1. Download the upgrade module to your desktop by pressing this link: Download trixbox Upgrade Tool
  2. Navigate to Module Admin in FreeBPX, click on the Upload module link and then browse to the module you downloaded in step 1, choose it, and then press upload.
  3. Now you simply install the module as if you were downloading it from the Online Repository and then you can follow the instructions provided by the module to upgrade!

We hope that this answers the requests we have received to help you participate in this great release!

If you are excited to learn more about what has changed and how to benefit from this great project, get signed up for the next Open Telephony Training Seminar scheduled for October and be amongst the first to learn the ins and outs of the great release!

I gave it a test in VM...

Went well. I opened the instructions a second time in a new tab so I could follow them as I proceeded. Nice work.

Repository clarification

SkykingOH's picture

Philippe -

Does this upgrade module restore the path to the FreePBX repository for all future FreePBX updates?

For clarification, as long as the user does not update tbm-guicore the FreePBX framework and upgrade module will update via the FreePBX repositories?

Thanks......

Scott, this simply points

Scott,
this simply points the local copy of FreePBX to our mirror site which then allows it to get the update, along with a few other house keeping tasks. Once you do it, you are back on standard FreePBX. A new yum update of any sort form trixbox would probably put it back to the forked version.

I tried this on a forked version just now and this is the error I received.

The following error(s) occured processing the uploaded file:

File must be in tar+gzip (.tgz or .tar.gz) format
You should fix the problem or select another file and try again.

This was done at 7:00pm today EST.

Well for some reason the extension got changed to gz when downloading . Changed it to tgz and all worked well.

Am in the process of the upgrade will let you know how it pans out.

One note. I did this earlier on a Pbx in a Flash system and it got stuck at the timeconditions upgrade. I reloaded my IE session and saw the timeconditions had an error on upgrade but it allowed me to try again. I did and the system is running fine.

Fatal error: Call to

Fatal error: Call to undefined function timeconditions_timegroups_add_group_timestrings() in /var/www/html/admin/modules/timeconditions/install.php on line 156

This is the error I just received with my upgrade on a Tixbox system. Hit the IE refresh button and was returned to the confirmation screen to process the upgrades. Hit process took 3 seconds and ...and... and... Ok, yes it worked great. System is running as normal.

Total upgrade time 3 min 57 seconds.

I can now do a backup, install a real PBX (PBXinAFlash) and be confident that my system will run as expected.

Thanks Philippe and FreePBX team.

P.S. what is your mailing address.

Fonality, Fonality, Fonality

Listen close.
I'm the guy who developed the Trixbox UI.
I will write this in a rhyme
so you brothers and sister with ears chyme in if you think I'm out of line.

Fonailty is a big waist of time
have you seen Kerry's waist line
they cut freepbx out claiming an abundance of fat but the fat is in their heads and bottom lines.

Criminals always try to justified their crimes
but you know, they lie all the time
stealing without giving credit to the divine.

FreePBX, keep pushing cause the last laugh will be yours and mine.

Peace.

P.S. I created a Flex app that allows me to manage multiple asterisk servers by exposing FreePbx Classes through SOAP. Your code rocks and I appreceiate all the hard work. I've donated a few $$$ and will be pitching more your way soon. Keep up the good fight!

Let's do this

mmosier's picture

haha nice Rhyme

Look I have been thinking. The only thing that I use in trixbox is the endpoint manager. So why don't we make a new ISO with an endpoint manager and FreePBX only. One that is not for the noobs because some stuff might have to be manually changed in the .conf files. Basically the reason I use trixbox is because 1. it looks nice (my customers get training on how to pull the phone reports and such) Also its hard to explain to the customers when they see the word FREE. So we can make a basic ISO with Asterisk and FreePBX but call it something that sounds professional so we can all tell our clients that we sell _____________ PBX system that is a Linux Asterisk based system.

I have tried without success to install asterisk then put FreePBX on top. (granted I was using a version of cent OS that was not in your How-to) The process should be put into the ISO so you install and it's there Asterisk, FreePBX and hopefully and endpoint manager kind of module. That's all we would need to run a kick ass system. This would be a strong system because it's only dealing with a couple of things not all the trixbox fluff.

Just my two cents.

It could be called openPBX a FreePBX joint.

Thanks!

Thank you FreePBX for this upgrade tool! I just finished running it on my trix system and was glad to see your nice blue shining through again :-).
Then I went to http://pbx/maint and clicked on pbxconfig and it changed it back to the blah green :-(. I don't see any other changes, all software modules report 2.5. I still have my new time conditions etc...

Just letting everyone know that not only should you avoid updating tbm-GUI, & tbm-pbxconfig, but you should also avoid clicking the the PBXconfig link under your /maint page. Otherwise you will get the mean green again. And maybe point the update repo back to trix??? I don't know all of the consequences...

Is there a way to see where FreePBX gets it's updates? Then I can check my system and see if it has changed. :-) hehe
