PhoneBook Directory refuses to update to 2.5.0

Description

In FreePBX 2.5.1.0/PIAF Phone Book Directory refuses to install when executing Download and Install request from the interface (System previously upgraded by standard online upgrade from original Yellowjacket install)

It reports: "Downloading pbdirectory Untarring..Error(s) downloading pbdirectory:

  • Could not remove old module /var/www/html/admin/modules/ to install new version"

... Please advise what is the appliable clean fix to clean&restore properly the module properly in the 2.5.0 or later version, properly, please - without hacking the environment, please. Apparently other forum users have the same exact experience. Forum replies concern obvious experiments that appeared to work, sometimes, though it appears that often nobody knew 'why,' for sure. Thank you; the community needs the bug fix, please. ... System background info: This is remotely hosted on a reliable virtual hosting provider specialized in this software. Install history: This is the 1st error experienced, ever, in over 1/2 year since 1st install from provider's image. No other previous errors were experienced) Only in the 2.5.0 upgrade did this happen, to our knowledge. We waited until when 2.5.0 was announced as "stable" in emails from FreePBX/PIAF and we then installed the full recommended upgrade module set, according to instructions provided. Everything else has been left in its generic form. No 'creative' modifications have been otherwise made. Hence, this is a "Vanilla environment" with all 'stable' updates applied, promptly. Please note: No 'beta' product installs were ever made. Many Thanks to All!

the issue is a permission issue. The only bug, exposed by your error was an incomplete error message because of a typo in the error print statement, fixed in r7139.

Something apparently set up your permissions or ownership problematically to cause this issue, which is not a FreePBX bug. (It could be a configuration problem in ampotal.conf).

This error occurs as the result of the following process:

  • first we remove any old version of the module being downloaded from the _cache dir
  • next we download and untar the new module in the _cache directory
  • once successful, we remove the real module from the modules directory
  • next we move the _cache version to the real module's place

The error indicates that the rm -rf command to remove the module failed, this is related to permissions which we don't control.

If you have a properly configured system and amportal.conf, you can use the "amportal start" command which inherently runs "amprotal chown" to set the permissions and ownerships correctly.

If the problem has been re-occurring on a particular distro (PIAF sounds like) you should work with Tom and/or Ward to address it. They know how to contact us if they need any help or clarification on the FreePBX side, or if there is something more subtle that is a bug in FreePBX that they need to work with us on.
